Our National Officers
Daniel Sauerwein has been a Member of the Brigade since 2023, and is currently serving as the Press Secretary, being appointed by Past President Petrovic. In addition, he is a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) first joining in 2007 as a National Member-at-Large before being transferred to the John M. Thayer Camp-at-Large of the Department of Nebraska and the Dakotas when that Department assumed control over the Dakotas. He is also a Hereditary Life Companion in the Missouri Commandery of the Loyal Legion since August 2023 and was elected as a member of the Council for the Commandery at the 2024 annual meeting. He earned his eligibility for Companionship through the service of his 5 x great- uncle, Capt. Peter Cover Spencer, who served in Co. B, 74th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Daniel is a member of the Nebraska Rangers, Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) with the 116th Pennsylvania. He works as a Reference Specialist in the State Archives at the State Historical Society of North Dakota, assisting patrons with accessing historical materials to aid in research, including genealogical research. A historian by training, he holds a Master of Arts in History from the University of North Dakota (UND) and a B.A. in History from Illinois College. He completed coursework towards a Ph.D in History from UND and previously taught History, Geography, and Political Science courses at the college level. He is a member of the Sons of the American Legion, VFW Auxiliary, and Civil Air Patrol. He also engages in Civil War living history and historical miniature wargaming. An Army Brat, he is originally from Jerseyville, Illinois, but has lived in North Dakota, first in Grand Forks and now resides in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Vice President Jonathan Swarts
Vice President Jonathan Swarts (charter member and Past President) resides in Indiana. Vice President Swarts served as interim President after the passing of Past President Robert Petrovic. He is the Commander of the Indiana Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS). He is an office holder in Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) John Auten Camp #8 and the Department of Indiana of the SUVCW. President Swarts is also the National Junior Vice President of the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans (SSAWV). He resides with his wife and college-age son in South Bend, Indiana.
Secretary/Treasurer Timothy O'Neal
Secretary/Treasurer Timothy "Tim" O'Neal (charter member) served as Logan's Brigade Vice President and Director of Grant's Guards, Cadet Cop resides in Dallas, Oregon with his wife, National Woman's Relief Corps Presidential Liaison and G. A. R. Memorial Museum Board member Kathy Jo O'Neal. Together the O'Neals supervise the NWRC "Civil War Nurses Project" researching and documenting the women who served as nurses and support staff during the American Civil War. Tim is also the Secretary/Treasurer of the Col. Edward D. Baker Camp #6 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Post located in Dallas, Oregon, and Department Secretary/ Treasurer of the Department of the Columbia SUVCW. He was an active Civil War reenactor from 2013 to 2019 with the 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company B.


Chaplain Sumner Hunnewell
Sumner Gary Hunnewell, Jr. was born in Portland, Maine, to Sumner Gary Hunnewell and Shirley Ann Mayo. He is married to the former Sylvia Beatrice Richardson and together they have two children Sumner Tristan Hunnewell and Rachel Elanor Hunnewell. Sumner and his wife are members of St. John’s Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Arnold, Missouri. He has a B.S. Mathematics/Computer Science from Central Missouri State University and a Master’s degree in Telecommunication Management from Washington University in St. Louis. He is retired from software support, development, and project management for Southwestern Bell/SBC/AT&T.
Patriotic Instructor Dean Smith
Dean Smith is a third generation Los Angeles native. He earned his B.A, (1968), and M.A. (1970), degrees in Political Science, from the University of California, at Riverside. He had a 34-year career in public service, with Los Angeles County, and has been retired since 2004. Dean is a Charter Member, and Patriotic Instructor, of Logan’s Brigade; PCC, and current SVC of the Gen. W. S. Rosecrans Camp No. 2, as well as Department Council Member, and ROTC Coordinator, of the SUVCW; a member of the Civil War Trust; a former member of the Board of Directors, for the Drum Barracks C.W. Museum; and, President, and Program Chair, of the Los Angeles Civil War Round Table. He has created eight presentations on Civil War topics, including one on John Logan, which he has given five times.

Aide de Camp Edward Bower
Edward "Ed" Bower is a charter member and served on the Executive Board for the founding of Logan's Brigade. Ed resides in Murphysboro, Illinois, the birthplace and childhood hometown of General John A. Logan. He is married to Woman's Relief Corps National President Kathy Bower. Ed believes his most significant accomplishment is surviving being Dad through the childhood and teen years of three daughters. He devotes his life now to four beautiful Granddaughters and one quite dashing Grandson, who is also a charter member of Logan's Brigade.


Council Advisor Steven Tichenor
Steven Tichenor, originally from Illinois, resides in New Jersey. He was appointed by then WRC President to be the first National President of Logan's Brigade. He presided over the Brigade for three years. Steven designed the original membership medal/badge, and the original flag of the Brigade. Steven is a member of the SUVCW.
